The production and processing of paper, cardboard and pulp generate significant quantities of various technological residues, which are classified under code 03 03 Waste from the production and processing of pulp, paper and cardboard.
This group includes paper and cardboard trimmings, defective corrugated cardboard, paper dust, as well as fibrous sediments and sludge generated at on-site wastewater treatment facilities of pulp and paper mills.
Since these materials consist primarily of plant-based cellulose fibers, recovered paper pulp and process additives, they require proper sorting and a differentiated approach to collection.
Environmentally responsible management of such waste at industrial facilities requires strict compliance with fire safety regulations and prevention of accumulation in production areas, as dry paper dust and fine particles are highly flammable.
In addition, wet sludge from wastewater treatment facilities and residues containing laminated or chemically treated layers (films, adhesive residues) must not be indiscriminately disposed of at ordinary landfills. Enterprises are required to arrange sealed temporary storage and transfer such fractions for treatment.
The most rational approach to managing these wastes is their reuse and recycling within the framework of the circular economy.
Clean paper and cardboard trimmings and production rejects are returned to the technological cycle as valuable secondary raw materials (recovered paper) for the manufacture of new products, while fibrous sediments or substandard laminated materials may be directed to the production of construction materials or thermal treatment at specialized facilities.
