The processes of smelting, refining, and heat treatment of aluminium and its alloys are accompanied by the generation of specific mineral and metallurgical residues classified under code 10 03 Waste from thermal processes in aluminium metallurgy.
This category includes spent refractory lining materials, carbon waste from electrolytic cells, smelting slags, as well as other non-hazardous wastes in this group generated during technological operations. As these substances contain mineral oxides, carbon, and associated technical components, they require proper record-keeping and control from the moment they are generated at the facility.
Environmentally sound management of such waste requires compliance with strict industrial safety and sanitary regulations, as crushed mineral residues and dust can contaminate the air in the workplace, while certain components of metallurgical processes may react with moisture.
They are strictly prohibited from being indiscriminately left in open production areas, transported to unauthorized waste disposal sites, or allowed to become dispersed by wind. Enterprises are required to arrange sealed or weather-protected temporary storage in special containers, bunkers, or enclosed areas.
The most rational approach to managing these wastes is their recycling, secondary processing, or safe reintegration into industrial use within the framework of the circular economy.
Safe mineral residues and stabilized components may be used as inert materials in construction or road infrastructure, while more complex industrial residues are sent to specialized facilities for advanced processing, recovery of valuable fractions, or safe disposal at specialized industrial waste landfills.
