Photographic processing, printing, production, and use of various light-sensitive materials generate specific liquid and solid residues classified under code 09 01 Waste from photographic activities.
This category includes spent developers, fixers, bleaching solutions, as well as photographic film and paper that do not contain silver or silver compounds, along with traditional silver-containing materials. Since these substances contain chemical reagents, heavy metals, and specific polymer substrates, they require careful control from the stage of accumulation at the enterprise.
Environmentally sound management of such waste requires compliance with strict environmental and sanitary standards, as liquid chemical solutions and reagents can severely contaminate aquatic ecosystems, alter environmental acidity, and have toxic effects on living organisms.
It is strictly prohibited to discharge them into municipal sewage systems, leave them in open areas, or dispose of them at ordinary municipal landfills. Enterprises are required to arrange sealed temporary storage in special chemically resistant closed containers and transfer them exclusively to licensed operators.
The most rational way to manage these wastes is the recovery of valuable components, recycling, or safe treatment instead of direct disposal in landfills.
Silver-containing solutions and materials undergo specialized recovery of precious metals, while safe photographic film and paper that do not contain silver or silver compounds, together with associated plastic substrates, can be sent for shredding and material recycling or for controlled thermal destruction with energy recovery.
