| 06 05 02* | Sludges from on-site wastewater treatment containing hazardous substances | R1 R12 R13 |
Local treatment of industrial wastewater at chemical, electroplating, machine-building and other industrial enterprises generates complex toxic residues classified under code 06 05 Sludges (sludge, silt) from on-site wastewater treatment.
This category includes dewatered or paste-like sludges, silt and filter sludges generated as a result of reagent treatment, coagulation, flocculation or neutralization of industrial wastewater. Since these materials contain high concentrations of heavy metals, toxic organic compounds, residues of process chemicals and other hazardous impurities, they are considered hazardous.
Environmentally responsible management of such waste requires strict compliance with industrial and environmental safety regulations, as hazardous sludges can release toxic vapors, generate dust when dried, or be washed by precipitation into soils and groundwater.
They must never be transported to ordinary municipal landfills, stored in open earthen pits, or discharged into water bodies without prior neutralization. Enterprises are required to arrange sealed temporary storage in special closed containers or at specialized sites with a solid impermeable surface and a leachate collection system, transferring these hazardous materials exclusively to licensed operators.
The most appropriate approach to managing this waste is thorough stabilization and neutralization.
Using modern methods such as chemical immobilization, cementation, bituminization or thermal dewatering, toxic components and heavy metals are reliably bound within an inert matrix, preventing their migration into the environment.
