05 01 Oil refining waste

The processes of oil refining, purification of fuels and lubricants, and operation of specialized production facilities generate complex hazardous residues, which are classified under code 05 01 Waste from the refining of petroleum.

This category includes oil sludge, bottom sediments from storage tanks, lubricant residues, as well as sludge masses generated at local wastewater treatment facilities during the treatment of industrial and stormwater runoff. Since these materials contain a mixture of hydrocarbons, water, mineral particles, heavy metals and residues of process reagents, they are considered hazardous.

In addition to highly hazardous petroleum residues, relatively safe oil sludges from this waste group may also be generated during oil refining and the operation of wastewater treatment facilities (for example, neutralized or low-toxicity sediments with a low content of hydrocarbons and heavy metals).

Such materials usually arise after advanced treatment and biological degradation. They are subject to regular laboratory monitoring and must be stored at specialized sites with hard-surfaced areas and protection from precipitation to prevent pollutants from being washed into the soil.

The most rational approach to managing such oil sludges is biological remediation (composting using specialized microorganisms that degrade hydrocarbons).

This makes it possible to minimize the volume of waste accumulated at industrial facilities and fully comply with the principles of safe and rational resource management.
