Chemical synthesis processes, metal pickling, fertilizer production, and other technological operations are accompanied by the generation of highly reactive liquid residues classified under code 06 01 Waste from the production, preparation, supply and use of acids.
This category includes spent mineral acids (sulfuric, hydrochloric, nitric, orthophosphoric) and organic acids, acidic solutions, and process residues from their treatment. As these substances have pronounced corrosive properties, high reactivity, and toxicity, they pose a serious hazard to people, the environment, and technological equipment.
Environmentally sound management of such waste requires strict compliance with industrial safety regulations, as acids can destroy most materials, cause severe chemical burns, and immediately contaminate aquatic ecosystems or soils in the event of an uncontrolled spill. They are strictly prohibited from being discharged into conventional sewage systems, onto open soil, or disposed of at general landfills.
Enterprises are required to arrange hermetically sealed temporary storage in specialized acid-resistant tanks (lined vessels or polymer containers) with continuous monitoring of their integrity and to transfer them exclusively to licensed operators.
The most rational approach to managing this waste is regeneration or deep chemical neutralization.
Spent acids with an acceptable degree of purity may undergo rectification, evaporation, or filtration for recovery and reuse in the production cycle, while acidic solutions unsuitable for regeneration are subject to controlled neutralization using alkaline reagents to form safe salts or are rendered harmless at specialized facilities.
